Overview

Wispr Flow is an AI dictation app that turns speech into text and inserts it into the field where you are writing. Beyond transcription, it adjusts punctuation and formatting and removes filler words and repetitions. It can help people who prefer speaking when drafting messages, emails, notes or instructions for an AI assistant.

The custom dictionary lets you add names and terms you use at work. Spoken shortcuts can also insert saved text, such as an address or a standard reply. You still need to review the result, especially names, numbers and changes of intent made while dictating.

The service also includes Notetaker, a module for recording and summarizing meetings. That use has its own workflow. Flow dictation lets you write by voice in apps.

Features and functionality

  • Adjusts punctuation and text structure and removes repetitions and filler words.
  • Offers a custom dictionary for names, acronyms and specialized vocabulary.
  • Expands spoken shortcuts into saved text snippets.
  • Can adapt writing style to the app, such as an email or messaging app.
  • Works with more than 100 languages, with language selection in settings.

Use cases

  • Reply to messages and emails by speaking your response.
  • Capture ideas and drafts in a notes app.
  • Dictate longer instructions in AI assistant chat fields.
  • Insert recurring information, such as an address, using text shortcuts.

How to use

  1. Download the app for your device and follow the installation and setup instructions.
  2. Choose your dictation language in settings. Selecting only the language you will speak helps reduce confusion.
  3. Open the destination app and place the cursor in the text field.
  4. Start dictation and speak the text you want to write.
  5. Review the inserted text and correct names, numbers or passages that do not express your intent before sending it.

Required experience level

Basic use is accessible to beginners and requires no programming. Configuring languages, the dictionary and shortcuts involves learning the app's preferences, but you can do this gradually as you identify terms and text you use repeatedly.

Integrations

Dictation is available for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. On a computer, Flow inserts text at the cursor, including in email, notes and chat fields. It depends on the app being configured on the device and on a field that accepts text input.

Voice input in an app does not imply integration with that service's account. For example, dictating into a ChatGPT field means writing in that field. Recording and organizing meetings belongs to the Notetaker module, available for Mac and Windows.

Plans and access

There is a free option with usage limits and paid plans that expand access and offer team features. Check current allowances and terms before choosing, especially if you plan to dictate long texts frequently.

Transcription takes place in the cloud: audio is sent for processing even when you disable the use of your data to improve models. Model training, dictation storage and context use are separate controls. Flow uses information about the app and text field to format your writing, and the context option may include relevant text from the active window.

Before dictating confidential content, check these controls and your organization's rules. Submitting dictation feedback may also share session data, including audio, transcription and corrections, for troubleshooting and service improvement.
